FROM THE SPIRIT II-III
From the Spirit Season 2 will profile six different Native artists. Artistis, by definition, are people who live on the edge" and Native artists have had a tougher journey than most. They do, however, have a long and strong tradition on which to draw and inspires them. These are pople who have made a difference, in their own lives, to the lives of others and to the Art World. They all recognize the Creator and the forces of Nature in their work. They are a study in adherence to tradition coupled with a stretching of the artistic boundaries and the work retaiins its vibrancy to excite the imagination and the soul."
Tim Paul
Born in Experanze Inlet, north of Tofino, British Columbia, Tim Paul began carving in 1975 at the Arts of the Raven Gallery in Victoria, under the direction of Ben Andrews and later with John Livingston. From 1982-1992, Tim was Senior Carver at the Royal BC Musuem and left that position to oversee a native education program for Vancouver Island. As well as carving, Tim has released numerous limited edition silkscreen prints which portray various legends of Nuu Chah Nulth culture.
Sean Couchie
Sean Couchie makes his home in London, Ontario. Born in 1970 in New Liskeard, Ontario, he is a member of the Nipissing Band of Ojibways. Sean is a freelance artist and illustrator who likes the diversity of different media and uses oils, acrylics, pen and ink, scratchboard and woodburning for his work.
April Mercredi
April Mercredi, born to a Chinese father and a Cree-French mother in Calgary, Alberta, didn't start to paint until she was in her sixties and had retired. Along with vivid colours and expressions from the past, April uses natural elements like feathers, rocks and sticks in her artwork. She continues to draw primarily from Aboriginal imagery and continues to explore new elements to incorporate in her mixed media work.
John Rombough
John Rombough was born in Sioux Lookout, Ontario and was raised by adoptive parents in Prince Edward Island. As a young adult he bagan a search for his birth parents. He discovered that his father, Alfred Catholique was living in Lutselk'e in the Northwest Territories. John moved to Lutselk'e to rediscover his family and his cultural identity.
Aaron Paquette
Aaron Paquette, born in Edmonton, Alberta, a descendant of the Cree and Cherokee people, is a young artist with immense talent.
