OSKAYAK DOWN UNDER (ENGLISH)
This six part series will follows a group of students as they plan and work to finance a trip to Australia and New Zealand. The students are pupils of Oskayak High School in Saskatoon, a high school that has a large percentage of aboriginal students. Poverty, racism and brushes with the law are challenges in their young lives. With this background they plan to take a class trip to New Zealand and Australia. It’s a brave plan and we will follow them as they carry it out and make the trip of their lifetime.

Whakarewarena is a famous Maori village located on a thermal area. Before the group made the tour they were treated to a Maori performance. The tour guide was a big help and the students were able to gain a lot of new knowledge such as the temperature of the hot springs, cooking with steam and hot spring baths for the elders. Next the students are introduced to a Maori tattoo artist and they give it a try. Te Puia is a centre for Maori art and culture. The group received a tour from an excellent guide. They also learned about Maori weaving and carving and the meaning that is part of the art form. The guide and the students entered into a conversation about the loss of culture and identity.

The students’ first stop is Orakei Korako hot springs. Their guide took them on a tour and pointed out the historical and geological features. A pop quiz is given at the end and the students pass. The trip to Wellington is interrupted for some fun on a “zorb” and a bungee jump. Next stop was Wellington and the national museum of Te Papa. The guide was very helpful and explained the geological and historical story of the north island. The tour was followed by lunch and some mussels. The journey was coming to an end and they headed north to Auckland. In Auckland they went to another museum and saw a treasure trove of Maori artifacts. The trip ended with a sweetgrass ceremony giving thanks for the trip and a safe journey home.

In the first episode we meet the students and their school. Cheyenne Gopher, a student, acts as our host. The students introduce themselves and they tell us what they like about their school. They tell us their hopes and dreams following graduation but first they are planning a class trip to New Zealand. The class begins to study about the country and a Maori professor is available for them. They also have to get their travel documents in place and that includes passports. The police service provides free criminal record checks and they go down to thank the police chief. Part of their project includes blogging their experiences to the schools website. The work on the passports continues and the next step is to raise the funding for the trip.
