Catherine Lafferty has been writing stories from a young age and began working for a local newspaper in her teen years. She used her written strengths to publish her life story, Northern Wildflower, in 2018. With a background in fiction writing, she went on to write two more books called Land-Water-Sky and This House Is Not a Home. Catherine currently has two new books in the works, one fiction and the other a non-fiction about climate change from a Dene perspective. She grew up in Somba K’e (Yellowknife), N.W.T., and is a member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. Her mother’s home community is Ndilo.

Going forward, Catherine plans to complete her law degree in Indigenous legal orders and Canadian common law, with a focus on copyright law and intellectual property law. This focus will help Indigenous storytellers across the country by keeping cultural appropriation at bay. Until then, she works within the housing sector during the day to address the ongoing housing crisis and how Indigenous knowledge systems can contribute to solutions.
